Day 1: What Do You Really Want?
Devotional
We live in a world of endless options and opportunities, yet many of us feel more lost than ever. Despite having access to more resources, connections, and possibilities than any generation before us, depression rates continue to climb. Why? Because we're pursuing good things in the wrong order. When Jesus encountered his first disciples, he asked them a simple but profound question: "What do you want?" This wasn't small talk - it was an invitation to examine their deepest longings. These men likely wanted the same things we do: security, meaningful relationships, purpose, and freedom from their struggles under Roman rule. The beautiful truth is that our desires aren't wrong - they're actually God-given. We were created to long for connection, security, purpose, and joy. The problem isn't what we want; it's the order in which we pursue these things. When we chase after everything except God first, we end up feeling empty despite our achievements. Jesus knew this about human nature. He understood that our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Him. Today, take a moment to honestly examine your own desires. What are you really pursuing? What gets most of your time, energy, and attention?
Bible Verse
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." - Matthew 4:19
Reflection Question
If Jesus asked you today, "What do you want?" what would be your honest answer?
Quote
What do you want? Do you know what you want? Do I know what I want? Do you know what you want? We live in this world of really disordered desires.
Prayer
Jesus, help me to be honest about my deepest desires and longings. Show me where I might be pursuing good things in the wrong order, and give me the courage to examine my heart.
Day 2: The Problem with Good Things
Devotional
There's nothing wrong with wanting financial security, meaningful relationships, or a sense of purpose. These are all good, legitimate desires that God has placed within us. The challenge comes when we pursue these good things as ultimate things. Think about it: how many times have you said you wanted something, but when it came time to make the necessary sacrifices, you hesitated? We want the results without the commitment. We want the destination without the journey. This reveals something important about our hearts - we often want the benefits without being willing to pay the price. The disciples faced this same tension. They wanted freedom from Roman oppression, they wanted security, they wanted purpose. But following Jesus required them to reorder their priorities completely. What they discovered was that when they put Jesus first, everything else found its proper place. The issue isn't that we want good things - it's that we've made good things into ultimate things. When we do this, even the best gifts become burdens because they were never meant to carry the weight of our ultimate hope and security. Only God can bear that weight.
Bible Verse
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." - Matthew 6:33
Reflection Question
What good thing in your life have you been treating as an ultimate thing?
Quote
I think we pursue good things in the wrong order. That's what I think. I think these are all good things that we should pursue, but I think we have them in the wrong order.
Prayer
God, help me to see where I've elevated good gifts above You. Give me wisdom to put You first and trust that You will provide everything I truly need.
Day 3: The Cost of Following
Devotional
Following Jesus isn't just about adding Him to your existing life - it's about allowing Him to reorder everything. The disciples learned this firsthand. They went from being men who sought comfort and security to individuals willing to face persecution and even death for their faith. What caused such a dramatic transformation? They discovered that Jesus wasn't just there to improve their circumstances; He came to give them abundant, purposeful life. This required a fundamental shift in their understanding of what truly matters. They had to learn that decrease in their own agenda meant increase in God's purposes for their lives. This is where many of us struggle. We want the benefits of following Jesus without the cost. We want His peace without surrendering our control. We want His purpose without releasing our own plans. But true transformation requires sacrifice - not because God wants to take good things from us, but because He wants to give us something infinitely better. The beautiful truth is that what feels like loss in the moment becomes gain in eternity. When we surrender our small dreams to God, He replaces them with purposes beyond our imagination.
Bible Verse
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." - Matthew 16:24
Reflection Question
What is one area of your life where you've been hesitant to fully surrender control to God?
Quote
I must decrease so he Jesus, may increase. It's not about me, it's about Jesus.
Prayer
Lord, give me the courage to surrender my plans to You completely. Help me trust that Your ways are better than mine, even when I can't see the full picture.
Day 4: Your Unique Purpose
Devotional
You are not an accident. You are not just a random collection of DNA that happened to come together. The Bible tells us that God knit you together in your mother's womb, and He saw you there - perfectly and wonderfully made. This means there is something unique that you were built to do that no one else can accomplish. The disciples discovered this truth through their relationship with Jesus. As they walked with Him, they began to understand that their lives had meaning beyond their immediate circumstances. They weren't just fishermen or tax collectors anymore - they were part of God's grand plan to transform the world. When we place Jesus first in our lives, we don't lose our identity - we discover our true identity. We find that there is no greater purpose than a life lived in the center of God's will. This doesn't mean life becomes easy, but it does mean that every challenge, every struggle, and every victory has eternal significance. Your unique gifts, experiences, and even your struggles have prepared you for something specific that God wants to accomplish through you. The question isn't whether you have a purpose - you do. The question is whether you'll surrender to God's plan and discover what that purpose is.
Bible Verse
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." - Ephesians 2:10
Reflection Question
How might God want to use your unique experiences and gifts for His purposes?
Quote
There is something that you were built to do that no one else can do.
Prayer
Father, thank You for creating me with intention and purpose. Help me to discover and embrace the unique calling You have placed on my life.
Day 5: Walking in God's Provision
Devotional
When Jesus promised that all things would be added to those who seek first His kingdom, He wasn't promising a life of ease or material abundance. He was promising something far better - that everything we truly need would be provided when we align our lives with God's priorities. Notice the distinction: Jesus didn't say all the things you want will be added, but all the things you need. This requires us to trust God's wisdom about what we actually need versus what we think we need. Sometimes what we think we need would actually harm us, while what God provides - even if it looks different than our expectations - is exactly what our souls require. The disciples experienced this firsthand. They thought they needed political freedom and material security. What they received was spiritual freedom and eternal security - infinitely more valuable than what they originally sought. They discovered that there is no better place to be than walking with Jesus, experiencing His peace, stability, and joy that transcends circumstances. God works not in our doubts but in our decisions. Even when we carry uncertainty, we can choose to trust His provision and step forward in faith. When we do, we often find that what we thought we needed pales in comparison to what God had in store for us all along.
Bible Verse
"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:19
Reflection Question
What is one area where you need to trust God's provision rather than trying to provide for yourself?
Quote
There is no better place to be than walking with Jesus. There's no place where we feel more peaceful, more stability and happiness might be exchanged for joy instead.
Prayer
God, help me to trust Your provision in every area of my life. Give me faith to believe that You know what I need better than I do, and help me to rest in Your faithful care.
