Day 1: The Impossible Call
Devotional
When Jesus first spoke about taking up our cross, His disciples must have been shocked. The cross wasn't a piece of jewelry or a symbol of hope—it was an instrument of torture and death. Yet Jesus used this terrifying image to describe what following Him would look like. He wasn't asking for weekend volunteers or casual supporters. He was calling people to complete surrender. In our world of carefully managed risks and calculated decisions, this call feels impossible. We want to follow Jesus, but we also want to maintain control over our lives, our finances, our futures. We're drawn to a faith that enhances our existing plans rather than one that might completely redirect them. But here's what's beautiful about Jesus' impossible call: He never asks us to go where He hasn't already gone. Every sacrifice He calls us to make, He made first. Every risk He asks us to take, He took on our behalf. When we feel overwhelmed by what He's asking, we can remember that He's not a distant commander giving orders from safety—He's a loving Savior who walked this path before us.
Bible Verse
'From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.' - Matthew 16:21
Reflection Question
What area of your life feels too precious or important to surrender to God's plans?
Quote
Jesus tells us something quite different than what our human nature tells us.
Prayer
Jesus, Your call to follow You feels overwhelming sometimes. Help me trust that You've already walked every difficult path You're asking me to take. Give me courage to take the first step.
Day 2: The Great Exchange
Devotional
There's a question that haunts every person who seriously considers following Jesus: "If I give my life away, will I lose myself or will I find life?" It's the most natural concern in the world. We've spent years building our identity, our security, our plans. The thought of surrendering all of that feels like death. Jesus doesn't dismiss this fear—He addresses it directly. He tells us that those who try to save their lives will actually lose them, while those who lose their lives for His sake will find them. This isn't just spiritual poetry; it's a fundamental truth about how life works. Think about the people you most admire. Chances are, they're not the ones who spent their lives protecting themselves and accumulating more. They're the ones who gave themselves away—the teachers who invested in difficult students, the parents who sacrificed for their children, the friends who showed up in crisis. When we hold tightly to our lives, we discover they slip through our fingers. When we open our hands and give them away, we find more life than we ever imagined possible.
Bible Verse
'For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.' - Matthew 16:25
Reflection Question
What would it look like for you to 'lose your life' for Jesus in your current circumstances?
Quote
If I give my life away, will I lose myself or will I find life?
Prayer
Lord, help me understand that giving my life to You isn't loss—it's the greatest gain possible. Show me what it means to find true life through surrender.
Day 3: Breaking the Illusion
Devotional
We live with a powerful illusion: that we're in control of our lives. We make plans, save money, buy insurance, and build security systems, all in an attempt to guarantee our future. While these aren't bad things, they can become dangerous when they give us a false sense of control over outcomes that are ultimately in God's hands. Jesus calls us to recognize that our control is largely an illusion. We can't control the economy, other people's choices, natural disasters, or even our own health. What we can control is our response to whatever comes our way and our decision to trust God with the things we cannot control. This doesn't mean we become passive or irresponsible. It means we hold our plans lightly, recognizing that God's plans are always better than ours. When we release our death grip on control, we discover something beautiful: the peace that comes from walking with the One who actually is in control. Our security doesn't come from our circumstances—it comes from the One we walk with.
Bible Verse
'Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."' - Matthew 16:24
Reflection Question
What areas of your life are you trying to control that you need to surrender to God?
Quote
This idea of control is nothing more than an illusion that we convince ourselves is real. It's not.
Prayer
God, help me release my illusion of control and find my security in You alone. Teach me to trust Your plans even when I don't understand them.
Day 4: The Faithful Step
Devotional
Following Jesus isn't about making one dramatic decision and then coasting. It's about taking one step of faithful obedience, then another, then another. The people we admire for their faith didn't become spiritual giants overnight—they became who they were through countless small choices to trust and obey God. Maybe your next step is having that difficult conversation you've been avoiding. Maybe it's being generous when your budget feels tight. Maybe it's serving someone who can't repay you, or forgiving someone who doesn't deserve it. These steps might seem small, but they're how spiritual growth happens. Each act of faithful obedience builds our spiritual muscle and deepens our trust in God. We discover that He's faithful in small things, which gives us courage to trust Him with bigger things. The nurse who prays with patients, the teacher who brings peace to troubled children, the neighbor who shows unexpected kindness—they're all taking steps of faithful obedience that change both their own hearts and the world around them.
Bible Verse
'What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?' - Matthew 16:26
Reflection Question
What is your next step of faithful obedience in your relationship with Jesus?
Quote
They became who they were because they took a step of faithful obedience to Jesus and then they took another one and another one and another one.
Prayer
Jesus, show me the next step You want me to take in following You. Give me courage to be faithful in small things so I can grow in trust for bigger things.
Day 5: The Love That Goes First
Devotional
The most amazing truth about following Jesus is that He loved us first. Before we ever thought about Him, He was thinking about us. Before we chose Him, He chose us. Even knowing we would reject Him, disappoint Him, and fail Him, He still created us and died for us. This is the kind of love that changes everything. When we understand that Jesus' love for us isn't based on our performance but on His character, it transforms how we approach the sacrificial life He calls us to. We're not trying to earn His love through our obedience—we're responding to a love we've already received. We're not giving our lives away to an uncertain future—we're giving them to Someone who has already proven His love for us. This sacrificial life Jesus calls us to isn't a burden—it's the most fulfilling life we will ever lead. When we experience God's presence through acts of service and surrender, we want more of it. When we hear His voice through obedience, we want to hear it again and again. The life of following Jesus costs us something, but it gives us everything that truly matters.
Bible Verse
'From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.' - Matthew 16:21
Reflection Question
How does knowing that Jesus loved you first change your motivation for following Him?
Quote
Jesus loved us first. Jesus. He created us. Imagine being there present with God as he says to the heavenly host, hey, I love all you spiritual beings, but I want some physical beings to have a relationship with.
Prayer
Thank You, Jesus, for loving me before I ever loved You. Help me live out of the security of Your love rather than trying to earn it through my actions.
